When I reached the desk, I whispered, "I'm sorry," and placed the book on the counter with my late pass clutched in my hand.

Excerpt 2: Marcus stood at the bus stop while the sky darkened. He checked the schedule again, but the wind flipped the paper from his hands. Raindrops splattered on his backpack. He wished he had brought an umbrella, but he had rushed out the door after oversleeping. The bus finally rounded the corner, headlights shining through the mist. As it pulled up, the driver waved. Marcus climbed aboard, shaking water from his sleeves, and hoped he would still make it to his piano lesson on time.

Excerpt 1: Jada dribbled the ball down the field, her ponytail bouncing behind her. She scanned for a teammate and spotted Luis near the goal. He waved, calling for the pass. Jada planted her foot and sent the ball sailing. It curved just enough for Luis to trap it with his chest. The crowd cheered as he kicked it toward the net. The goalie dove, but the ball slipped past her fingers. Jada laughed and slapped palms with Luis as their coach blew the whistle.

Excerpt 2: I balanced the mixing bowl against my hip and read the recipe again. It said two cups of flour, but I had already dumped in three by accident. I sighed and brushed a dusty cloud from my sweatshirt. Mom peeked around the doorway and raised an eyebrow. "Need help?" she asked. "I've got it," I said, even though I wasn't sure. I cracked another egg, stirred hard, and hoped the cookies would still taste okay when I pulled them from the oven.
