At recess, Sam and Leo joined a fast-paced soccer game. Leo had practiced all week and wanted to show his new kick. When he sprinted after a pass, his shoelace caught, and he skidded to the blacktop, scraping his knee. The ball rolled on and the other kids shouted for Sam to keep playing. Sam jogged to Leo instead. He helped him sit by the fence and asked if he needed the nurse. For the rest of recess, Sam stayed beside him, keeping score and cheering for their team so Leo wouldn't feel left out. When the whistle blew, Leo said, "Thanks for sticking with me."

The kitchen table is covered with folded towels and a stack of plates. Diego: "Mom will be so surprised we finished the chores." Nora: "I hope so. Um... something happened." She glances at the hallway, twisting the strap of her backpack. Diego: "What do you mean?" Nora: "I bumped the side table when I came in. The blue vase fell and cracked." Diego: "Oh no! Maybe we can hide it." Nora: "No. I knocked the vase with my backpack, and I'm going to tell Mom and offer to pay from my allowance." Footsteps approach. Nora takes a breath and steps toward the door.
