Our school should start a daily, 10-minute cleanup of the playground. Short, regular cleanups would make the area safer, because picking up sharp plastic or broken pencils can prevent cuts. The routine would also teach us responsibility; when students help care for a space, they are less likely to litter there later. A quick sweep keeps trash from blowing into the creek behind the fence, which protects ducks and other wildlife. The student council tested the idea last Friday and filled two small bags. Cleanup kits could be stored in labeled bins near the door, and classes could take turns by week. Our custodian said he appreciates help but will still do the weekly deep clean.

I believe keeping a reading journal helps you understand books better. Writing down questions and quotes helps you remember them during class discussions. When you flip back through entries, you can see how your thinking changed. Talking about books is the most fun part of school. A journal lets you notice patterns, like how a character acts in different chapters. I started my first journal in third grade. Some journals have colorful covers, but any notebook will do. If you spend just five minutes after reading, you will be ready to share ideas next time.
